Реферат: eng: Based on the results of original studies and the literature, we consider the role of genetic, physiological, and ecological factors in the realization of reproductive potential in mammals. Using multifetal species (minks and small rodents) as an example, it is demonstrated that embryonic and early postnatal mortality of progeny makes a significant contribution to the stabilization of actual fertility at a level optimal for the species. Immunogenetic interactions between the maternal and fetal organisms were shown to play a key role in the development of vital traits of the progeny. Olfactory mating choice in rodents was shown to promote the formation of optimal structural and functional combinations of parents, ensuring effective development of the progeny and thus the maximum realization of their fitness. © 2011 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.
