Реферат: eng: It remains to be seen whether the supposition concerning a weak variation in the characteristics of the processes in a direction perpendicular to the model plane is justified or, in other words, whether or not we can study the deep geodynamics of specific geological regions using such 2D models. In this paper, we make an attempt to answer these questions using the modeling of 2D approximation in a 3D approach. In order to realize this goal, we constructed an original 3D numerical model. The model is based on the application of the Navier-Stokes equations (in the Overbeck-Boussinesq approximation and in the geodynamic approximation for convective additives in the equations for momentum), the vector potential-vorticity variables, the method of fractional steps, and the method of successive grids. Detailed testing of the model demonstrated that this numerical model allows us to calculate convective processes in the Earth's mantle with sufficiently high accuracy. Here, we present the results of calculations, which demonstrate the inapplicability of 2D approximations to real geodynamic situations. Copyright © 2005 by Pleiades Publishing, Inc.
